Madison (Wis.) theater posters, 1857.

Two posters advertising a March 24, 1857 theater performance of Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice." One poster refers to Langrishe and Atwater, Managers, who operated a travelling theater troupe in the Midwest during this time. Langrishe was a major figure in the development of theater on the American frontier from 1850 through 1885.
